or dream personalities for a better world

One of the many ways to reach Nirvana or The Ultimate Happiness is to live Patanjali Yoga Sutras’ 8 limbs of Yoga. (Yama – Niyama – Asana – Pranayama – Pratyahara – Dharana – Dhyana – Samadhi)

The first 2 limbs, Yamas and niyamas are like moral rules, giving a strong base to a human personality. Yamas are: ahimsa – satya – asteya – brahmacarya – aparigraha.

Let's see all yamas in details.

#1 yama is AHIMSA – Non-violence

Being non-violent in word, thought and action. Not causing pain to living beings.

{ahimsapratisthayam tat sannidhau vairatyagah YS 2.35}

#2 yama is SATYA – Truthfulness

Being truthful in both words and actions. Not telling lies, following a true and honest path.

{satyapratisthayam kryaphalasrayatvam YS 2.36}

#3 yama is ASTEYA – non-stealing

Not stealing property or wealth that belongs to others.

{asteyapratisthayam sarvaratnopasthanam YS 2.37}

#4 yama is BRAHMACARYA – abstention

Focus on celibacy to maintain purity and preserve vital energy. Abstinence on particular days.

{brahmacaryapratisthayam viryalabhah YS 2.38}

#5 yama is APARIGRAHA – non-possessiveness

Non-grasping of things. (and not just things)

You want one thing, then you want another – you will never be satisfied.

{aparigrahasthairye janmakathantasambodhah YS 2.39}
